Postings from the plot ...
Florists often hear, or overhear, people complaining that you’ve only got to say ‘wedding’ when getting a quote from suppliers, and a premium is immediately added. If you are a supplier, you’ll probably have an explanation for this. As florists — and slightly unusual ones at that — we can only speak for ourselves. But […]
Well done Jen for giving an excellent interview on the Radio 4 PM program on Saturday, talking about British flowers and how their popularity has grown!

Huge congratulations are in order to @flowersfromthefarm for not only their amazing show & PR at @rhschelsea but also for their work in getting the flower-growing sector officially recognised by government, funders and policy-makers.
As Georgie Newbery, Chair, Flowers from the Farm and owner of @commonfarmflowers says: "Getting this SIC code means that not only can we prove how much flower growers are putting into the British economy but that we`re in a position to be acknowledged and encouraged by government, because we finally exist! - and the most important thing is that we can now look at the biodiversity net gain protocol, which will give us protection. The SIC code also allows us to lobby for more, and if we can lobby for more, then it will be much, much clearer for consumers that the flowers that they are buying are British-grown."
Benefits to the consumer include:
Fresher, longer-lasting flowers - more local funding means a stronger supply of British flowers that reach vases days faster than chemically preserved imports
Easier sustainable/eco-friendly shopping - a thriving domestic market gives consumers a genuinely sustainable, low-carbon, and pesticide-light choice
Greater variety - investment into local growers will expand the availability of unique, fragrant, and heritage varieties that don`t survive long-haul shipping.
This really is brilliant news for British Flower Growers, and we should all raise a glass this bank holiday weekend, to the people who have made it happen!

Happy World Earth Day!
The very fact that our planet is called ‘earth’ should remind us what it is made of — and the importance of our soil. The health of our soil is key to the health of humans and our planet. So, just as we can do an awful lot to improve our own physical health so we can do loads to improve — or maintain — soil health.
When we took over a former Bramley apple orchard, here at Blooming Green, we took over a patch of land that had worked hard feeding apple trees and had compacted strips of grass where tractors had been driven over the years. Monty Don, when he was here filming My Dream Farm for Channel 4, was clearly horrified by our growing medium. It certainly didn’t look like the well-tended soil he’s used to on Gardener’s World.
Now, after nearly 20 years of no-dig growing and the addition of a whole lot of compost, the soil is almost unrecognisable — in a good way. We now have light ‘friable’ soil that looks worthy of a TV gardening show — as well as plants that thrive. Our no-dig approach works hand-in-hand with growing organically — so our soil hasn’t been treated with pesticides, herbicides or fungicides — and the soil structure is left undisturbed.
Earth worms, micro-organisms and bacteria are free to do their thing, breaking down organic matter and improving fertility — whilst the addition of compost helps to retain moisture. The compost also suppresses weeds which, if they do raise their cheeky heads, we can easily lop off with a hoe! We don’t mind weeds, but we do want maximum space for our cultivated flowers, so we’ve got more for cutting.
At this time of year, as our flower beds come back to life, it feel like a time to celebrate and look forward to months of abundant and colourful blooms from now until November. So, happy world earth day!
Comment below and tell us what you are doing to make your soil happier & healthier for years to come 🙂

Would anyone be interested in sharing a bulk buy of compostable absorbent fabric pads? They may not sound exciting, but they are perfect for wrapping around stems if doing PYO or sending flowers out by courier. They are absorbent on one side and dry on the other. We used this brand for years (Sirane) and it`s now under new management — with a minimum order of £1000. The pads work out at roughly 12p each, inc VAT. Delivery would be free. So, if you spent £200, you would get nearly 2000 pads. Would love to get some in, and get using them this season... Please DM us, or email, if you`re interested. Thank you! Jen ...
